Dillinger's Crown Point Escape, Air Hockey Injuries, and Miscellany
Jean Harlow joined us on this day in 1911,
...
On this day in 1934, John Dillinger pulled off a daring escape out of Crown Point jail using a gun carved out of wood. He had blackened it with shoe polish and carved "Colt 45" on the side. Some say it was smuggled into the jail in hollowed out bible. It sold at auction in 2010 for $19,000.
Question to witness (hostage): Would you say he was jolly?
Answer: Yes, he sang for us part of the way.
Question: What did he sing?
Answer (smiling): Get along little dog, get along.
Laughter from the crowd.

Emma's mom- I don't think that we should let anybody in, for asylum or anything.
Emma- Well you would have been the reason all those Jews would have died then.

I got a real laugh out of the credits of the fake trailer Gretel made... Beneath the Farting Skies, directed by John Ford, haha. Executive produced by our leopard gecko too.
I just realized why I find this so funny. I've often said that I consider my religion to be "the skies of John Ford films." I'm in the middle of watching one with both kids, but they couldn't know that I've said that in the past. So I guess according to my religion, this is perhaps the only possible abomination.

Ira Glass with some world-class advice:
"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through."

The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment
At four years old children were given a choice between eating a marshmallow immediately, or waiting 15 minutes and being given two. They were studied later and those who had resisted scored on average 250 higher on SAT's, and were significantly more competent in a variety of ways.
The author John Green had a high school roommate who did not believe in Carpe Diem. He believed in Carpe Posterium, "seize the future." He didn't miss one question on his SATs and became a doctor.
