Newt Ethics, Hitler's One Ball, and 500 Years of Church/State Separation

George Orwell left us on this day in 1950. Great quote:

"So long as I remain alive and well I shall continue to feel strongly about prose style, to love the surface of the earth, and to take a pleasure in solid objects and scraps of useless information."

I'm noticing a lot of people criticizing "feminists." I don't get it, everybody I know believes in equal rights for women, so everybody I know is a feminist.

I'm not pessimistic concerning our future. Stephen Pinker's book, The Better Angles of Our Nature, gives me hope...facts and figures and arguments showing that world has been becoming increasingly safer. Bone fragments show that perhaps 50% of prehistoric people died as a result of violence. We've come a long way. Slavery was outlawed in every country. Religious freedom took hold. Think about just the last hundred years- human rights, women's rights, civil rights, gay rights, even animal rights. We're currently in the longest period of no wars between major countries. We have huge problems, to be sure! We have ups and downs but things have trended positively.

BUT, with nuclear weapons and impending climate change there could be drastic changes. Things have trended positively but it's up to us ensure that they continue to do so.

The Swiss Anabaptist Movement was founded on this day in 1525, when Conrad Grebel, Felix Manz, George Blaurock, and about a dozen others baptize each other in the home of Manz's mother in Zürich, breaking a thousand-year tradition of church-state union. All of my ancestors are Swiss and German Anabaptists.

On this day in 1997, the House of Representatives voted 395–28 to reprimand Newt Gingrich for ethics violations, making him the first Speaker of the House to be so disciplined. His crime? He claimed tax-exempt status for a college course run for political purposes. Seems pretty light by today's standards!

On this day in 1931, murderer and bank robber, Francis "Two Gun" Crowley was executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, at the age of 19. He had three-month crime spree culminating in a two-hour shootout with the New York City Police, witnessed by 15,000 bystanders.

His last words- "You sons of bitches. Give my love to Mother."

Hilarious story from a friend:

I got another round of nerve injections today. For my nerve compression from my hernia surgery. Multiple injections in my hip, groin, thigh and knee.

Boy, he kept hitting my hip/pelvic bone today. But you cant flinch or squawk. Not a good idea. Haha.

Afterwards, I said. "Somewhere, there is voodoo doll shaped like me screaming his head off."

He didnt laugh...

Every time I hear a political speech or I read those of our leaders, I am horrified at having, for years, heard nothing which sounded human. It is always the same words telling the same lies. And the fact that men accept this, that the people’s anger has not destroyed these hollow clowns, strikes me as proof that men attribute no importance to the way they are governed; that they gamble – yes, gamble – with a whole part of their life and their so called 'vital interests."

Hawking- "A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever, " said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!""
