A few months ago Emma and I were watching The Wonder Years... Emma scoffed at something idiotic that Kevin did, and I gave her the bit of advice that needs to be accepted in order to enjoy the show. Every Christmas night the kids go to bed, and Emma is usually in bed, and I have several hours to myself. I don't know what it is, but I get hit with a wave of depression, the same depression I have when I leave the beach. It does not last long, I don't think I ever carry it into the following day, but it gives me a window into what some people have to live with all the time.
For me, it has something to do with coming down from a heightened experience, leaving behind something that was definite, nostalgia for my own youth combined with a remembrance when all seemed perfect, satisfaction that I'm somehow helping to create the same memories for my children, and a recognition that I will only have this experience so many more times.
