This guy Trump is all mixed up. He's spoken to hundreds of crowds over the last several years, never once using a word that anyone learned after second grade. Then on Christmas Eve he asks a seven-year-old if he still believes in Santa, because it's "marginal" at his age. When he talks to babies I bet he recites Shakespeare and quotes Socrates.

A few months ago Emma and I were watching The Wonder Years... Emma scoffed at something idiotic that Kevin did, and I gave her the bit of advice that needs to be accepted in order to enjoy the show. I told her, "Kevin Arnold is a douchebag." And today she gave that quote back to me in the form of a bumper sticker, so I can share my wisdom with the world.

On this day in the year 800- the coronation of Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor, in Rome, and on this day in 1066, his 9x great-grandson, William the Conqueror, was crowned king of England, at Westminster Abbey, London. I believe I'm related to each of them, but then again, most of us are.

W. C. Fields left us on this day in 1946. It makes sense that he would die on Christmas day, since children love it so much and he hated them so passionately.

"Christmas at my house is always at least six or seven times more pleasant than anywhere else. We start drinking early. And while everyone else is seeing only one Santa Claus, we'll be seeing six or seven."

His last words:

"Goddamn the whole fucking world and everyone in it except you, Carlotta!"

Every Christmas night the kids go to bed, and Emma is usually in bed, and I have several hours to myself. I don't know what it is, but I get hit with a wave of depression, the same depression I have when I leave the beach. It does not last long, I don't think I ever carry it into the following day, but it gives me a window into what some people have to live with all the time.

For me, it has something to do with coming down from a heightened experience, leaving behind something that was definite, nostalgia for my own youth combined with a remembrance when all seemed perfect, satisfaction that I'm somehow helping to create the same memories for my children, and a recognition that I will only have this experience so many more times.

...

Jack Kerouac- "In the general uproar of gifts and unwinding of wrappers it was always a delight for me to step out on the porch or even go out on the street a ways at one o’clock in the morning and listen to the silent hum of heaven diamond stars, watch the red and green windows of homes, consider the trees that seemed frozen in sudden devotion, and think over the events of another year passed."

...

Bertrand Russell- “I do not think the evidence for the Virgin Birth or the Resurrection of Christ is such as would convince any impartial inquirer if it were presented outside the circle of theological beliefs he was accustomed. There are innumerable such stories in Pagan mythology, but no one dreams of taking Dionysus or Osiris very seriously.“

...

Charles Bukowski- “My beerdrunk soul is sadder than all the dead Christmas trees of the world.”

...

Charles Dickens- “And numerous indeed are the hearts to which Christmas brings a brief season of happiness and enjoyment."

...

Salman Rushdie-"What kind of Christmas present would Jesus ask Santa for?"
