Interesting juxtaposition... unfathomable for someone who died in 1895. Wonder what our graves will look like in a hundred plus years. These are the graves of two of my thirty-two 3x-great-grandparents, Benjamin and Mary Kreider.
...
Those two were deeply religious, but guess what- it's World Atheist Day.
Yuval Noah Harari- “If I believe in God at all, it is my choice to believe. If my inner self tells me to believe in God –then I believe. I believe because I feel God’s presence, and my heart tells me He is there. But if I no longer feel God’s presence, and if my heart suddenly tells me that there is no God –I will cease believing. Either way, the real source of authority is my own feelings. So even while saying that I believe in God, the truth is that I have a much stronger belief in my own inner voice.”

BoJack Horseman... it's one of the best shows in the history of TV, right? I fell asleep last night during the one where he gives his mom's eulogy. Tonight I had a sense I better watch it again. Oh my goodness, was that episode written by Shakespeare?

People who are against DC statehood should write to their representative, and they should consider themselves fortunate to have a representative to write to, unlike the residents of DC.

It's nice every once in awhile to take a deep breath, exhale, and realize that these increasing numbers WILL hit a peak and begin dropping. But this is no time for complacency.
In the next breath after you exhale, try to focus on what you can do to keep that peak lower. It appears as though hospitals are going to be overwhelmed, and depending what we do, they might be overwhelmed for a longer or shorter period of time.

A lot of people feel that the conclusion of the Mueller report exonerates the president. Maybe it does, but I don't know how they know what it concludes. Knowing what we know about Paul Manafort's ties to Russian oligarchs, I'm wondering if it explains in a reasonable way why Trump brought him on as his campaign manager for free... to raise one point. Either way, it was nice of Paul Manafort to pay for the investigation with his confiscated ill-gotten gains.

The average age of my grandparents when they died was 71.3, for my great-grandparents it was 70.6, for my second great-grandparents it was 63.8, and for my third great-grandparents it was 71.4. The overall average is close to 70. Not too bad... ignoring the advances in medical science I should have 25 good years left.
But then it hit me, maybe just the men would be a more accurate predictor. Yep, bad news, the average lifespan of the men it's only 65.
I tried to make myself feel better by looking at the average of just my grandfathers through my great-great-grandfathers, ignoring my third great-grandfathers. Guess what, it only gets worse- 61 year lifespan!
I better go to bed before I prove it's more likely that I'm not even going to wake up. Hope to see you all tomorrow!

Today at work Sloth laughed at my hat and called me Ed Gein. I was just now looking for Ed Gein photos with Zuzu on my lap. She saw his picture and said, "That's you Daddy, same hat!" Here she is, proud of herself.

Oh, these healthcare reform knuckleheads. Trump dangled the carrot of ending mandatory maternity care, in order to appeal to the Republican Freedom caucus. Read that sentence very closely, it's insane. I mean these guys REALLY want to lower taxes on the super rich! This reminds me of Roger Ebert's review of Freddy Got Fingered. To paraphrase, this bill is not the bottom of the barrel, it's not below the bottom of the barrel, it doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as barrels.
A barrel would be a better bill. The script of Freddy Got Fingered would be a better bill. Doing nothing would be a much better bill.

The psychologist Erich Fromm was born on this day in 1900. He wrote in Escape from Freedom:
“The most important psychological condition for fascism is the inability to relate to others in a loving and meaningful way… Authoritarian societies replace love and connection with obedience and submission.”
Also on this day, in 1919, Benito Mussolini formed the fascist movement in Italy.
Fromm wrote in The Dogma of Christ: and Other Essays on Religion, Psychology and Culture:
"An illusion shared by everyone becomes a reality."
He could have been writing about religion or fascist politics.

Akira Kurosawa was born on this day in 1910. Wow, 35 years old when Hiroshima was bombed. He said, "A film is never really good unless the camera is an eye in the head of a poet." He made arguably 15 masterpieces. Here's a list of his favorite hundred movies:

I love that it includes Stranger Than Paradise and My Neighbor Totoro, among others. I like to imagine going back and telling Jim Jarmusch while he was filming Stranger Than Paradise, that it would go on to become one of Kurosawa's favorite films.

Elizabeth Taylor left us on this day in 2011. Forget her beauty and forget her movies and she should still be remembered for raising awareness of AIDS at a time when thousands had died but the president had yet to publicly say the word.
“An arrangement made with God, my mother, and Louis B. Mayer made me this person, this product, you know as Elizabeth Taylor. I showed up. I took light and directions and lots and lots of notes. I’m proud of the work. But what I most care about—always cared about—was being a good friend, a helpful person—and I’m happiest when someone tells me that I did that, that I became that person. The rest is fate, beshert, dumb luck. But the good person? I worked hard at that."
Now let's take a moment to remember her beauty and her movies. From A Place In the Sun:

NPR- Frans de Waal's Bottom-Up Morality: We're Not Good Because Of God

Slate- New Poll Shows Trump’s Base Eroding, Approval Rating Sliding, as 60 Percent Find Him Dishonest
Another poll has this guy's approval at 37%... I know, I know, "fake poll." Funny thing about these fake polls... they all have his approval dropping. I know, I know... "fake dropping." If they drop any further he might hit Saddam Hussein-level 100% support.
How about this though... 56% disapprove of him and 60% find him dishonest... so 4% don't necessarily disapprove of him, yet they find him dishonest. This is bad news- the country is 4% Ken Bone.

Washington Post- Trump delivers ultimatum to House Republicans: Pass health-care measure on Friday or he’ll move on
Hahaha, this is a joke right? I read a lot of pro-Trumpcare (or whatever you want call it) opinions and many are of the flavor, "sure, it has problems now but they'll get fixed after it gets passed." Well this shows you exactly how much he cares about getting it right.
If they don't pass anything and Trump vows to keep Obamacare I think we should start calling it #Trumpdoesnotcare

Vice- Here's Who We Think Would Actually Win in a Trump-Biden Fight
Pretty fair article, haha. They are talking about an actual fight. An idea... if Trump wins he gets his $25 billion wall, if Biden wins $25 billion will go toward all the ludicrous things Trump cut, such as the NIH budget. And the best thing is we don't even need to increase taxes, the funds will come from the pay-per-view profits.

New York Times- Werner Herzog has never thought a dog was cute.
Question: Why are you inclined to interpret nature that way [as having a monumental indifference toward us] rather than, say, in the more cosmically harmonious manner of the Dalai Lama? You interviewed him for one of your documentaries.
Herzog: I advise you to go outside on a clear night and look out into the universe. It seems utterly indifferent to what we are doing. Now we are taking a very close look at the sun with a space probe. Look at the utmost hostility of the hundreds of millions of atomic bombs going off at the same time in its interior. So my personal interpretation of nature comes from taking a quick look at the stars.
